Once, a woman in a silent London apartment was sitting at her window, observing the rain running down the glass while her little boy was taking a nap close to her. Her existence had traversed three continents, Jamaica, England, and America, and in every chapter, she had been a bearer of tales of hardship, hope, and deliverance. The woman in question is Cecile Labar, the creator of Amazing Caring Woman (Eber & Wein Publishing, Pacific Book Review), a play that explores the interrelations of friendship, love, faith, and marriage. Her voice, though gentle, is still firm and bears the traces of the survivors’ and the purpose’s rhythm.

From Kingston to London: The Roots of Resilience

Cecile’s tale starts in Kingston, Jamaica, where simplicity and hardship characterized her early life. “We inhabited a two-bedroom house,” she reminisces. “The wooden toilet and kitchen were outdoors, and the oven was made of wood and stones.” When she was only six, she went through a heartbreak that would shape her view of love and You have to fortitude. Her mother departed for England in search of a better life for her children. “When she was going to leave, she said she was going downtown to the market,” Cecile recollects. “But she was too well dressed and had a suitcase. I wept and rolled in the dust. My grandma comforted me and brought me to her church. There, she made me learn the 23rd Psalm.”

The sense of early abandonment had turned into faith, a powerful force that would support her in every trial. The church of her grandma was the first school of Cecile, where spirituality mingled with the power of human spirit being strong even in suffering.

After some years, when Cecile came to London to meet her family, she was in a different world, considerable fog, heavy rain, and extensive and diverse cultures. The disparity between Jamaica’s warmth and London’s grayness was stamped on her by the imagination. “I use those experiences while creating characters,” she clarifies. “Some talk patois, while others use correct English. My intention was to illustrate how disparate worlds can coalesce in a single narrative.”

Finding Art in the Ordinary

When Cecile was in her early twenties she had a job as an Education Social Worker in a secure unit for adolescent girls. Being locked in with her pupils she found out that storytelling could be a help through difficult times. “To amuse them I wrote a play,” she recounts. “A few girls and a male staff member participated in it besides me. The performance took place in the gym and all the staff watched it. It was a hit.”

A few years after that, the same spark would get her writing career back to life. While she was studying at the Center of the Media Arts in Manhattan she got a diploma in Broadcast Announcing and suddenly she visualized herself as a storyteller and a director. “I wrote a commercial about jewelry and told the actress to act like Marilyn Monroe,” she says with a grin. “That was the moment I understood that writing was one of my vocations.”

Her artistic life was in pieces, but they were of the forms of fragments, poetry, lyrics, and screenplays, and they were all different kinds of the influences of her environment. In London, she was allured by the jam sessions in the local pub. “I couldn’t buy a drink most nights, but I would go and listen to the musicians. Their music influenced me to produce lyrics.”

The patches of inspiration became sooner her first screenplay, Amazing Caring Girls, which later was renamed Amazing Caring Woman after she moved to New York. “I didn’t want the title to be ambiguous,” she clarifies. “I had been through a lot of stories of abuse and I wanted to make one that showed a powerful character instead of a weak one.”

Creating “Amazing Caring Woman”

Theater piece portrays the lives of three women, Misty, Teresa, and Elena, who through a chance meeting in a London hair salon create a friendship that becomes their support during the hard times of marriage breaking and spiritual searching. Misty, the magazine writer, has an inkling that her husband might be unfaithful. Teresa is unsure whether her husband’s controversial profession is a burden or not to her reputation. And Elena has to deal with the implications of letting out a long-held secret about the origin of her son’s birth.

Cecile says that “the plot shows how women’s relationships, trust, and faith are intertwined.” “God’s love is the basis of each human relationship once you experience a personal relationship with God. And you would treat the people around you with kindness and respect.

Amazing Caring Woman, branded by Pacific Book Review as “an excellent stage play for character-centered storytelling, relationships exploration, and thinkers on the floor,” has been among the quietest recognized plays due to its lively language, jokes, and human touch. The critic particularly pointed out that the play “through the most natural and casual storytelling,” allows the audience to think about pleasure, religion, and loyalty.

Cecile’s life served as a source of inspiration and also her accurate research work. “The Royal National Theatre was my first place”, she said, “I spoke to a senior press officer there.” “Next I went to the mosque, the sports center, social services, and the library. I wanted to bring reality to each scene.”

While her characters are imaginary, Cecile has taken the living ones and put together the fabric of them. They are faithful, eager, and diverse in their culture British, but with immigrant roots. “There is humor and cleverness in their lives,” she says, “as well as deep lessons about discernment, love, and understanding.”

Faith, Vision, and Perseverance

Faith has always been Cecile’s guiding star. After being a mother, she was baptized in a Baptist Church, later converting to the Seventh-day Adventist faith in 2011. “The reason I joined the Seventh-day Adventists was that I wanted to keep the Sabbath as God commanded in the Bible,” she gives the reason. “I’ve gotten so much knowledge and wisdom through this journey; mainly from Doug Batchelor’s teachings and 3ABN programs.”

Cecile’s spirituality is reflected in her art. “I would never resort to offensive language or pornographic scenes. It’s possible to write about love in such a way that it does not offend anyone,” she admits.

The struggles of divorce, motherhood, and health issues, arthritis in both of her knees included, have put her to the test. “I have been going through financial hardships for a very long time,” she confesses. “Though being retired has its disadvantages, it also has its advantages; I can write more now. To me, the word ‘perseverance’ means holding on to faith when the promise seems far away.”

Cecile does not look at her limited royalties from the publishing as a reason to stop writing. “My victories include three published books, and three screenplays written,” she brags. “I am still in the process of finding the right producer who will be able to turn Amazing Caring Woman into a movie.”

A Legacy of Faith and Humanity

Cecile’s legacy, apart from the narratives, and even we can say the formalities, is largely formed by gratitude and faith. The Jewish prayer that she is contemplating for her will, gives her peace:

“O my God, the soul which you placed within me is pure. You created it, formed it, breathed it into me, and will preserve it within me. You will one day take it from me, but will restore it to me in the hereafter. So long as the soul is within me, I will give thanks to You.”

Fame and fortune have ceased to be the yardsticks of success, in Cecile’s opinion. “It’s reaching one goal that you planned to achieve,” she claims. “I’m spiritually very happy to know that the Holy Spirit is still with me.”

Cecile has not stopped writing. She has just finished the proofreading of her screenplay Time Mission, which is then going to lead her to the next pitch for the producers. “I almost landed a traditional publisher once,” she claims. “It’s still on ice, but I’m optimistic.”

Her point to people aspiring to become writers and women in general is a very simple but at the same time deep one. “Having great friends through your life is a must. In case of the writers, research is a key thing. Start with developing your characters and your story will unfold.”

The Message That Endures

A particular line uttered by Victor, one of the husbands, is a spiritual cornerstone in Amazing Caring Woman: “Our neighbor is every individual who needs help, every soul wounded or bruised by the adversary. Only by accepting the virtues and grace of the Lord can we keep the laws.”

It is a line that presents Cecile Labar’s philosophy and her art, compassion without borders, faith without fear, and storytelling that reminds us of our common humanity.

Cecile still continues her silent mission to impress people through words, faith and love today. The tale of her journey from one wooden house in Kingston to the stages of London and the pages of international publishing is a testimony that the stories can change not only the audience but also the storyteller in the process.
