In a return to psychological horror that’s harrowing and also intellectually stimulating, director Zach Cregger (Barbarian) has dropped the first official trailer for his latest film Weapons, and it’s already causing shockwaves throughout the horror community. Designed as a missing persons cause blog, the site includes “real” news stories, video surveillance footage, audio recordings, and interviews with fabricated townspeople. Online theories that have already emerged include everything from extraterrestrial interference to occult rituals.

Production and Studio Hype
The Weapons script-to-screen journey has been dramatic. The production sparked a bidding war in 2023, with New Line Cinema picking up the rights for a record-breaking $38 million. Production on the film started in early 2024 under strict secrecy, with sets built in remote areas outside of Vancouver and high-level NDAs said to have been signed by the entire cast and crew.
Early test screenings were so encouraging that Warner Bros. brought the movie forward from a January 2026 release to August 8, 2025, looking to ride the tail end of late-summer box office and awards season buzz.

More than a tale of missing kids, Weapons delves into more profound issues of society. Mass hysteria, online misinformation, and collective trauma are themes that permeate the story. A subplot involves the circulation of false information on the internet, resulting in community tension and vigilantism.

The movie also insinuates more expansive psychological themes, such as the boundaries of memory, parent guilt, and stifled bereavement. Garner’s character is said to be shown to have a dubious past herself, testing the audience’s assumptions of victimhood and responsibility.
