In the constantly changing world of romantic comedies, a new movie is set to win the hearts of viewers and rebrand the genre. “Materialists,” a new film directed by the Oscar-nominated Celine Song, features a talented cast—Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal—in a story that navigates love, ambition, and the realities of contemporary relationships.

Against the colorful backdrop of New York City, “Materialists” tracks Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a high-powered matchmaker who has helped create many marriages and finds herself embroiled in her own love conflict. Her life is turned on its head when she encounters Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), a handsome and successful bachelor, and runs into her former boyfriend, John (Chris Evans), an aspiring actor with unresolved emotions.

The movie explores Lucy’s internal struggle between the temptation of Harry’s wealth and stability versus the unresolved feelings she has for John. This story examines the complexities of love, decision, and societal pressures that get in the way of making a romantic choice.

Celine Song, acclaimed for her debut film “Past Lives,” brings her unique storytelling prowess to “Materialists.” Drawing from her personal experiences as a matchmaker in New York, Song crafts a narrative that challenges traditional rom-com tropes. She emphasizes the emotional depth and bravery required to truly love and be loved, aiming to elevate the genre beyond mere entertainment.

Song’s collaboration with cinematographer Shabier Kirchner, who worked on “Past Lives,” guarantees a visually engaging experience. The movie was captured on 35mm film, which provides an element of realism and nostalgia to the narration.

The chemistry between Johnson, Evans, and Pascal has attracted a lot of attention, with their chemistry being commended by fans and critics alike. A sneak peek given by PEOPLE reveals a teasing moment between Lucy and Harry during a wedding reception, playfully cut off by John, showcasing the interactions of the three actors.

Johnson’s Lucy radiates both the character’s vulnerability and strength, while Pascal’s Harry oozes charm and urbane sophistication. Evans adds depth to John, a man tormented by regret over what has passed and longing for what can be. Their chemistry drives a very engaging narrative that audiences connect with.

In interviews, Pascal and Johnson countered the stereotype of romantic comedies as “silly,” speaking in favor of the emotional resonance and universal appeal of the genre. They pointed out that love, loss, and longing are multidimensional experiences that connect across a broad spectrum, and that in Song’s direction, “Materialists” seeks to represent these themes sincerely.

Its trailer, complete with voice-over reminiscent of old-school rom-coms, was well-received. Enthusiasm was seen from fans over the return of the nostalgic touch, as one said, “They brought back the trailer voice over?! This is a late 90’s -2000’s romcom by A24 and I’m so down for it.”

“Materialists” will be released in the United States on June 13, 2025, by A24, while Sony Pictures Releasing International will be releasing it overseas. The release date of the film falls on the same time frame as Universal Pictures’ live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” though both films will be targeting different demographics.

With the release date looming, there is growing anticipation. The mixing of a powerful story, solid performances, and Song’s visionary direction makes “Materialists” a standout entry into the romantic comedy genre.
