Artists exist, and dreamers are among them. Through the YaTii Talisman Instagram account, one ascends through the most vivid colors, sees alien-like figures shimmering, and gets amazed by cosmic skies; besides, one gets to know about almost mystical symbols that are alive with a strange yet comforting warmth. Theatrically mitigated the fantasy that was to be revealed as a richly conceived cosmos of a world that was formed of the past, memory, and future by the factors of healing the world and transformation. Life of Carlotta Schiavio has that world, from her multicultural background to her continuing art journey, and it speaks with the universality of the need for peace, creativity, and community.

Roots Across Continents, Visions Beyond Borders

The narrative of Carlotta Schiavio starts in Europe, swiftly, however, it cuts through various continents. She was born in Italy and spent her childhood in Ethiopia, carrying a mix of cultural factors – Italian, Russian, Syrian, Austrian, and Ethiopian – and their bearing can be heard in her work.

The mix of root of her identity was the overrunning current through which the world of YaTii Talisman came to pass; the fantastical realm sprang there.

The artist’s initial creative direction was in jewelry design but not in painting: the skill of jewelry making was the one that necessitated the accuracy, beauty, and wearing of art on a body.

However, about 1998, she decided on a crucial career change – she left jewelry and moved to the fine arts realm thereby opening up a wider range of colors to be used in the course of her artistic transformation.

The change has been, in due course, a dramatic one. Carlotta has so created a niche that has used layering, mixed media, and an insightful interaction between rules and randomness that could not be categorized under any of the traditional forms of art.

Planet YaTii and the Birth of a Mythical Universe

In the year that marked the start of a new millennium, 2000, Carlotta drew the first sketch of a planet she called “YaTii.”

Her work grew piecemeal over a period of years to form “YaTii Talisman,” an entire imaginary world filled with colors, stories, and creatures that were myriad and different from those in the everyday world.

Her “Bugibatuki” are among her most notable creations: eerie, dreamlike creatures that come from YaTii to purify the planet.

Even though these characters –  playful, allegorical, unearthly – belong to the style of art-for-art’s-sake, they still have a deep message. Art is a healing tool. The artist describes it as: “a nation of peaceful aliens with mythical names” who “land on Earth… to save, protect and enlighten.”

“Stars Up Close,” “Apotropaic Magic,” and “portable paintings” are some of the other series that traverse cosmic realms, interior worlds, and spiritual iconography.

Over the years, all these have combined into a huge, ceaselessly evolving collection of symbols, styles, and messages: interstellar hope, psycho-spiritual exploration, alien empathy, and timeless beauty.

From Ethiopia to Philadelphia: A Global Art Journey

YaTii Talisman has not undergone the journey to be confined to online feeds or personal studios. Carlotta’s art has journeyed literally and metaphorically across continents and cultures. One of the significant events of her career came in January 2022 when her work was acquired for a permanent display at the new National Library “Abrehot” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, marking one of her major accomplishments.

Ethiopia, however, is not the only place. Her mixed media creations have been transported to a wide audience via exhibitions covering Europe, North America, and Africa.

In group and solo show in Philadelphia, Rome, New York, and other cities, the “Bugibatuki” paintings and other artworks have been, and still are, making their presence felt amongst different cultural scenes through a shared visual language.

Currently, artist registries and gallery portfolios indicate that Carlotta is based in Philadelphia (which is her home base). Nevertheless, she continues to work full time as an artist, which is an indication of her commitment, imagination, and the widespread appeal of her artworks.

Art as Healing – Message, Medium, Mission

What distinguishes YaTii Talisman is not only the visual richness but also the pure intention behind it. Carlotta describes her art as strongly connected to the issues of identity, transformation, and the union of nature and technology.

She considers art as immersive experience, painting as alchemy, blending intuition and technique to manifest something beyond the canvas.

Her creation process is often initiated with a very rough outline, but she allows and encourages serendipity: permitting colors, forms, and feelings to lead to the final shape. She states that this combination of rigor and unpredictability enables “ideas to develop naturally.”

The coexistence of supporting the structure of a painting and letting it follow its own course is essential to her imaginary: YatIi, the Bugibatuki, cosmic landscapes, getting directly into physically experienced art.

The public in her vision is more than mere aesthetic admiration. She points at the connection between myth and memory, between people and otherworldly beings, between distant cultures and shared humanity. Her art functions as the connection: from the personal to the universal, from heritage to hope.

Why YaTii Talisman Matters – In a World Searching for Light

The headlines that tell the story of the world are often about global conflicts, cultural divides, environmental disasters, and identity crises making the world feel like a battleground of lands against seas, countries against countries, and humans against humans. The work of YaTii Talisman might then be considered fanciful or escapist. But a bit of scrutiny reveals that she does not construct an escape but a sounding board.

Moreover, her multifaceted identity is a good example: she is born of diverse roots, raised on two continents, and now she is part of the global art community.

Her work speaks of the unity of the different – a reminder that always there is a multitude of layers in identity, that diversity can be a source of beauty, and that belonging doesn’t exclude the difference.

The Bugibatuki – aliens, fantastic and otherworldly – are, in fact, not just fictional creatures. They are the symbols of peace, empathy, adaptability, and harmony. In her world, that does not sound naive; rather, it has an air of urgency. The power to see ourselves from the perspective of the other beings – to envision empathy beyond the familiar, may be the most radical thing that we, in our fragmented reality, can still afford.

Finally, her trip tells us that art is not a luxury but a life-saving device. Carlotta’s path from jewel creation to painting to global exhibitions to mythmaking illustrates that expressive arts can take forms, adjust, and still be heard. That even one artist, rooted in past and future, can foster a universe big enough for multitudes.
