After Mark K. Olsen came back from Vietnam, he started looking for answers about faith, who he was, and what it means to know Christ. Over fifty years have passed, and his work now focuses on Christian mysticism, Scripture, and the belief that inner change is where spiritual growth starts.
For Olsen, it did not begin as a project or a draft. It began as a question he could not drop.
In 1971, after he returned from Vietnam, he found himself dealing with experiences and doubts that turned his life in a new direction. The weight of the war, along with what he calls out of body consciousness experiences, led him to look closely at consciousness. He also began to press on questions about faith and what spiritual reality may be.
“It pushed me to search for truth,” Olsen has said. “Bit by bit, it pointed me toward Christian mysticism.”
What started in a hard season grew into a spiritual path that has stretched past 55 years. He spent years reading, sitting with the material, and practicing devotion. From that, he formed a view of faith that stresses finding Christ by working from within oneself. Later, that direction became the base for his newest book, The Deeper Secret Teachings of Christ. He believes that Christ did it through him and, if that is true, Christ should get the credit.
A Life Built Around Devotion
Olsen did not treat his spiritual work like a side hobby.
He says that for about 45 years he followed four devotional sessions each day. After a while, the line between devotion and regular routine started to fade. Over time, he felt his whole life had turned into “one big devotion.”

Olsen argues that real change is not only about interest in ideas. He points to steady practice, quiet thought, and the choice to treat the search for truth as part of daily living.
On devotion, he is direct. “Daily devotions,” he says. “At least two practices each day, but three or four is far better.”

“These are not my ideas ideas; they are eternal and secretly taught all over the world.” He urges readers to check the verses for themselves.
Because of this, the book mixes careful biblical reading with mystical explanation. Olsen presents his work as a guide, not as a way to form a new faith. He wants people to find, within Christianity, the meanings he thinks are already there.
A major theme is that spiritual growth starts with self-reflection and quiet contemplation of profound truths.
Finding Christ Within
Contemplation matters a lot in Olsen’s view.
He does not frame it as only wrestling with holy questions. Instead, he says it is training yourself to notice the stillness between thoughts. In his mind, those quiet pauses make room for Christ’s direction.
“If you want to feel truly complete, set aside time each day to meet your higher self,” Olsen said.
When he talks about the “higher self” and the “Divine Self,” he is using terms shaped by his reading of Christian mysticism. Some readers may find the wording different from what they see in older church language. Still, Olsen puts these ideas inside his own sense of living close to Christ.
When asked if the kind of insight he mentions can come from the outside world only, he answered without hesitation.
“I do not believe that God can be found in the outside world. The kingdom of heaven is within you” (Luke 17:20–21).
He thinks Scripture lays the base. Then devotion turns what you know into something you can actually feel and live. Christ becomes real.
Review: A Demanding Invitation to Seek More Deeply
The book The Deeper Secret Teachings of Christ feels less like a starter guide and more like the end point of a long search for God.
Some readers may feel thrown off if they expected a straightforward devotional. Olsen pushes the reader to wrestle with big matters about who we are, what the soul means, what heaven is like, how inner change happens, and what Christ really is.
A clear strong point is the seriousness behind the whole effort.
This was not made because of a passing trend. Olsen’s ideas come out of years of reading and personal devotion. He leans on many Bible passages, which lets you check his claims for yourself. You might see the verses in a different way, but the text gives you something to work with.
He also does not want you to sit back.
Olsen seems uneasy with passive reading. His message keeps pointing back to doing things. Read the lines. Think on them. Slow down. Set aside time. Look into it on your own.
Not everyone will reach the same conclusions as he does. Spiritual meaning is personal, and some of his mystical ideas could spark disagreement among believers. Still, it is hard to ignore how genuine he seems and how convincing the attendant Bible verses are.

Recognition Without Making Recognition the Mission
Olsen’s projects have slowly found their way to readers. He has done interviews and made media appearances. His work has shown up in Passioneer Magazine, Hollywood Magazine, and The New Narrative. He also took part in eight interviews with Dr. Angela Chester on Daily Spark TV. On top of that, there were podcast and radio spots. His work was submitted to the Eric Hoffer competition too.
Olsen does not frame it as a chase for fame or money.
For him, the goal is simpler. He wants the books to reach people who feel pulled toward what they say.
That helps explain the path he took. His idea of success is not tied to typical milestones. After Vietnam, he started looking for something personal. Over time, he came to believe others should have it as well.
The Search Continues
Olsen wrote two books: The Layman’s Guide to Experiences in God Realization and The Deeper Secret Teachings of Christ. His newest edition is larger now, with more passages from the Bible. He has also thought about putting out another book someday.
Even after more than fifty years, Olsen still sounds like he is on the way, not at the finish line.
That may be the simplest way to say what he means.
Read more. Reflect. Sit still. Keep to prayer and faithful living. Try to understand with real questions. Treat the search for spiritual truth as something important. Commit yourself to multiple devotions a day.
For Mark K. Olsen, what started in the years after war grew into a lifelong path. The books show part of it, but they do not close the chapter.
